Smart Structural Systems—How Can Climate Action and the Economy Go Hand in Hand?

Thursday, November 5, 2026
In this webinar, we will be joined by a concrete expert and a civil engineer specializing in wood structures, who will each explain from their own perspective how smarter structural systems can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

About the event

How can smarter structural systems help reduce greenhouse gas emissions? We’ll explore optimization, using the right materials in the right places, and how climate and economics can go hand in hand—all while designing buildings for flexibility, transformation, and future needs.

Sverre Smeplass, Chief Advisor at Skanska Teknikk. Smeplass holds a master’s degree in engineering from NTH and has previously worked at SINTEF and NTNU; he has also served as an adjunct professor at NTNU. He has played a key role in the development of several of the Norwegian Concrete Association’s publications, particularly NB37, and has been a major driving force behind the development of low-carbon concrete in Norway.

Trond Egil Nyløkken, Senior Engineer at Sweco. Nyløkken graduated with a degree in engineering from HiST in 2007 and began his career at Sweco, working on the design of bridges, buildings, and structures, with a special focus on wood. He then worked for several years at Moelven Limtre—first as a sales engineer and project manager for deliveries and contracts, then as team leader for the structural engineering department, and finally as sales manager for the project department. For the past four years, I have worked as a technical manager and project developer at the contractors Woodcon and Dekagon, which specialize in turnkey subcontracts involving timber structures (glulam and solid wood/CLT). As of March of this year, I am back at Sweco as a senior engineer in the fields of building and transportation (bridges).
